A Tattoo Artist

​The artisan is someone who does skilled work with their hands. An artisan is also called “craftman” like book binder, bread maker, tailor, bag maker and so on. Today, I want to share my thoughts after viewing this video by Sigma.

The video I interested in describes about a tattoo artist.Undoubtedly, tattooing is a form of art. Tattoo is a form of body modification where a design is made by inserting ink, dyes and pigments. A tattoo artist is an individual who applies permanent decorative images or words on the skin. They usually learn their craft through an apprenticeship under a trained and experienced mentor.

​Kirsty Wells is a Yukon-born artist who has travelled throughout Europe tattooing for the past six years. Since she was a little girl, she has already desired to be a tattoo artist. The first time she ever saw anyone that was heavily tattooed was her uncle. She said: “that is what people have to look like”. I think she really felt someone who was heavily tattooed was cool!Hence, she learned tattooing and eventually became a tattoo artist.

Kirsty’s workspace included consultation room and workplace. At first, she would consult with her clients at the consultation room. She wanted to know the requirement of the clients and gave them some suggestions and examples. In addition, she always helped her clients solve the problem of fear of tattooing.

​In addition, the overall tone of her workspace was dark colour. The first time the clients walked in her workspace, they might fear and be anxious about tattooing. Even the furniture like the bed and the table was also black colour. Perhaps, she loved dark colour and it shows cool but it may intensify the fear of tattooing to the clients themselves. To me, if I were a tattoo artist, I would use the brighter painter instead of dark painter. Besides, the workspace can also be decorated with some plants in order to make the air clean.

There is a little messy in her workspace because there are a lot of equipment and tools that she uses for tattooing every day. Basically, a tattoo artist must have a tattoo machine and needles, tubes, tips, grips, ink, stencil products and a power supply. Even the best tattoo artists need quality tattooing supplies to showcase their skills. Therefore, Kirsty should make the space neat and tidy in order to keep the mind and body in a good condition.

I was surprised when I had realized that she even drew on everything including walls, couches, people, dogs and so on. Anything in her hand she could guarantee that there was be a mark left somewhere. Initially, I thought that tattooing can only be applied on human skin. So, when I knew her crazy action, I was shocked.

​On the other hand, most of the people want tattoos but they are scared. So, a tattoo artist should play an important role to guide them with a true way. It is not easy for her to communicate with her clients. Because she needs to understand the heart among the clients and let them trust her skill. Communication is a bridge among the people and it is the only way to success.

Moreover, I was surprised because being a professional tattoo artist needed high academic qualifications and working experiences. It is important to let people believe her technique. She loved tattooing and spent six years to learn a lot of different techniques in order to become a more professional tattoo artist.

In her workplace, there is not much sunlight going into the room. Hence, there is always been something scared and therapeutic to tattooing due to the dark environment. The tattoo artists should comfort and tranquilize the clients in order to relieve the stress and tension. Communication with each other is so important that tattooing is going to be proved to be interesting and beneficial to the clients.

Besides, a tattoo artist may work more than 8 hours in a day. Tattooing is a test of the artist’s patience. Beyond that, thetattoo artists must pay higher concentration on tattooing. So, the workspace should be more comfortable and silence to the artiststhemselves. They need to arrange their time properly in order to have appropriate rest. It can release the stress and improve the work efficiency.

A tattoo artist basically needs a lot of furniture and equipment like bed, chair, table, tattoo machine and so on. Christy Wells’ s workspace is quite small and narrow. Therefore, it is important to be good at planning the space and the management of storage system. A tidy and clean environment can affect one’s mood.

Undeniably, she was really passionate about tattoos. Whileshe had done her high school, she learned at the art school and then she was going to be a tattoo artist. After art school, she moved to Germany and travelled all over the country for the past six years. Furthermore, she worked with lots of different kinds of artists and learned a lot of different techniques.

Tattooing is a form of art. It makes someone self-conscious feel great because it can be used to cover scars and skin discolorations. It does not change someone as a person. Being tattooed does not make someone less intelligent, less compassionate, less friendly or more slutty. I notice that she has many tattoos on her body and I think that is why she loves tattooing. Tattooing is a way to act as a memorial permanently.

Last but not least, tattooing offers her a way to get right to the good stuff with everybody that she met and who she was tattooing. She hoped that she offered her clients a deeper way to get in touch with themselves. She just wanted to be catalyst in one’s change, healing and motivation.
