Grafeiphobia is a collection of office furniture that people can work in the beds instead of chair and desk. There are 3 pieces in Grafeiphobia that are each based on the frame of a basic, slatted wooden bed.

The designer, Pascal feels stressed and bored when working behind a desk and sitting on chair. He always has the feeling of being forced to work, so it is not productive in work. When lying down in bed, it is more comfortable, less stressed and more focused on working.

Basic Besk

The Basic Besk was inspired by sitting in bed with a laptop on the lap.

I agree with the Basic Besk because it consists a round bolster to provide the back support. When users sit for a long time, they may not feel back pain. Besides, it brings convenient as the foot rest part also doubles as a small storage box. This furniture can be applied for long tasks of up to three hours.

Triclinium Gum

The Triclinium Gum was inspired by lying with a side position.

I also agree with the Triclinium Gum because it consists of a complimentary pieces that can be used as a work surface. However, it is not suitable for doing long tasks.

Flying Man

The Flying Man is based on lying on the front.

I disagree with the Flying Man because this posture will cause the chest painful particularly for women. Besides, when working on Flying Man for a long time, users may have a neck pain. When the users have a downward gaze, it will happen hyperemia in their head.

There are some true and interesting comments below.

“The Flying Man will seriously hurt the spine, it’s not natural, in any way, to put the neck under so much flexion. It’s not just how the body works.”

“My spine: help!”

“Not sure I want to combine working with spinal decompression…”

Most of them disagree with design of the Flying Man because it will hurt the spines. Yes, to me, the Flying Man is not ergonomic as the spine is the most important part to support the body.

From this article, I have learnt a lot of knowledge about ergonomics. For example, the using of various densities of foam to explore different positions when lying in bed while supporting the body. Besides, the separate pieces of furniture can be adjusted for people of different heights and different leg lengths. The cushions with extra straps added allow the furniture to be used in different ways. Lastly, Popsicle, a complimentary design can be used as a laptop stand or standing support.

The design structure comprises a variety of work surfaces, mobile storage units and shelving that can be easily reconfigured to adapt to changing work requirements and technologies.

The designer, Gensler designs the modular furniture to create a trend for more flexible and collaborative workplaces where focused zones for task-oriented work. He want to meet the demands of offices around the world and shift away from the traditional desks towards more versatile and open-plan environments.

I strongly agree with the furniture designed because of reconfigurability. It improves collaborative work, socializing and learning in the job performance. It also increases the efficiency of work and reach the aims of multi-functionality, impromptu meetings, teamwork and work sharing. Furthermore, the whole form and materials of the system are simple, utilitarian and aesthetic.

There are only two comments here.

“The biggest innovation is that it’s black - which I really like.”

Yes, I also like the black theme of furniture as it gives a high-class performance to me.

“Nothing new here. Saw this concept in my grandfathers 1960’s Popular Mechanics magazine and many times since. And it’s not very sturdy looking furniture.”

I don’t know the concept is new or not, but I know that I like the design. To me, I feel it is hardy enough for the office workers.

There are many things I learnt about ergonomics from this article. Reconfigurable work surfaces can be in two fixed heights that offer options for both sitting and standing work styles. Moreover, the linoleum surfaces provide a tactile touchpoint and integrated under-shelf lighting can be specified to add a further functional element.

A mobile freestanding drawing and pinboard can be moved around to allow teams to conduct meetings anywhere within the office. There is another removable pinboard with a wipe-down whiteboard on one side and a cork-covered surface that can hook onto the tubular metal bookcase or attach to the mobile unit.
